PSA: no one is allowed to use this picture as an album cover ever again

thank you for coming to my ted talk

(P.S. also honorable mention to that other picture that's been used by CuntPump, Maggots in the Dead Skin, the Acid Feast / Glob split, and probably a bunch of others)

Gravewax / Gonococcus

This is one of my favorite splits in terms of packaging. I thought printing on cloth was a cool, unique idea and I'd love if it caught on with more labels. My one complaint is I felt like the art turned out kind of murky, which led to me procrastinating on posting this since I would have preferred to find digital copies of the art online. It just wasn't happening with the Gravewax side, so I finally gave in and scanned it recently, and now I feel like it's probably just meant to look that way.
Gravewax is an obscure black noise project by Jen Lazarus. This side of the split features heavy sample usage, to the point where I almost want to say it's not so much black noise with some samples so much as it's samples with bits of black noise. It's interesting though, and with the chanting and church music it does a great job of creating a somber atmosphere.
I think I read somewhere that Goredick makes Gonococcus songs with nothing but layering his vocals. It sounds like there's something more than that going on here, but it's hard to tell. Either way, it doesn't sound quite like conventional gorenoise, and I mean that in a good way. Goredick recently posted everything by Gonococcus on Bandcamp, so check that out too.
I think this is sold out everywhere. I can't say for sure if Lysergic Meltdown still has copies or not because their store has been down for a while now (I was actually afraid the label was done until they posted recently that they've been on hiatus and will be back in October), but I doubt it.

Vomitoma / 16-武装翼の女神

I have a bunch of Vomitoma splits that I've been neglecting to post so I'm going to work on correcting that. As always I'm not going to post it all at once, but look forward to more Vomitoma shit in the coming weeks. Other than that, I don't have a whole lot to say about that project's material on this split. You know what it is.
I'm not the biggest fan of cybergrind, but there's definitely some good stuff out there. It seems like 30XX inspired a whole wave of "anime influenced cybergoregrind with a number in the name" bands and 16-武装翼の女神 is about the best one I've heard. Shit, I'd argue that they're one of the best things that's come out in the whole underground grind scene in the past few years. You're definitely fucking up if you're not making an effort to get everything they put out. 16awg has a knack for creating hyperactive grind that never lets up in intensity but never gets tiresome. I'd say if anything the songs are mainly driven by the drums, but the focus isn't really on any one element so much as it's creating a constantly shifting wall of noise to bludgeon you with. There hasn't been anything new from 16awg since their first full length about a year ago (which will hopefully finally be getting a physical release before too much longer), but both members have several other projects that I can barely keep track of. They post about those other projects on the 16awg facebook page whenever one has a new release, so you can find them all there if you're interested.
I believe this tape is sold out from both labels that released it, but Uterus Productions has a copy for sale.

Pusdrainer - Drowned in Amniotic Putrescence

Here's the Pusdrainer post as promised. This seven inch (my second time ever posting a seven inch, yay) couldn't be much farther from the Sunken Cheek split in style while sticking to the same genre. Ocular Mutilation is very rhythmic and percussive, it sounds like the dude just miced up a big piece of metal and then beat the living fuck out of it. The vocals are highly distorted and they sort of sound like they've been slowed down, no idea if that's actually the case though. Ripped Open and Fed Upon abandons any pretense of competition and goes straight up harsh noise. It's totally solid shit. Obviously I always recommend buying the physical releases of things you like if you can, but I just want to say that I recommend it especially highly in this case if you like these songs. This rip is pretty good, but listening to the actual record is a whole different experience. It's readily available on discogs, but it won't be forever.

Punctured Esophagus / Hydrocephalus

The Punctured Esophagus side of this split comes from the project's Bandcamp page and the Hydrocephalus side is my own rip.

Ebola / Sewer Chewer

I can't actually remember for sure if I ripped this myself or if I just found it on soulseek. At any rate, I hope it sounds good.

Aqua-Eroticum - I Think It's Fine

I've been meaning to do another Pusdrainer post, but I'm going to put it off a bit longer in favor of sharing an artist that hasn't appeared here yet. In my mind at least, Aqua-Eroticum was one of the most prominent artists in sketchy, scummy US power electronics just a few years ago. One of the most striking features of the project for me is Tom's unique vocals. I don't know if it has to do with the effects he uses or if it's just the way his voice is, but it always sounds uncomfortable, even pained, like filth, sickness, and shame personified. Tom has been done with the project for two or three years now, but there's still a final tape due to come out on Uninvited Records this year.
The first three tracks on here are studio recordings (well, more like bedroom recordings no doubt but you know what I mean) and the last track is two songs from a live performance in Tennessee. Since they're so different in sound and about equal in length, I think of this release as coming in two parts. It's kind of surprising that (as far as I know) this wasn't released on tape, honestly.
The first three songs are creeping death industrial bordering on dark ambient. This is the most subdued material I've heard from Aqua-Eroticum but also arguably the creepiest sounding. I think it actually works best when you don't give it your full attention. Focus on something else while this plays and let it get inside your head and leave you feeling vaguely uneasy.
The live songs on here are a whole different experience. In this setting I feel more anger and disgust in Tom's voice as opposed to the feelings I talked about before. The noise sounds raw in the way that live electronics does, but it's a good recording. I find myself listening to these songs more than the first three, but I wouldn't say that the live material is better necessarily. It's just that there's more immediacy to this half, whereas the first half requires a certain mood and setting in order to be effective.
This was self-released three years ago and I highly doubt that a lot were made, so copies randomly turning up for sale on discogs are probably about your best bet and/or only hope if you want one.
