I've been sitting on this way too long - Black Mold Phallanx's first demo. BMP often gets labeled as a cybergrind project, but that has never felt like the right description to me. Maybe I just have too narrow an idea of what cybergrind is though. Anyway, despite it being the first demo, the BMP sound is pretty much already fully formed here. The one thing I notice is that the vocals are more like typical goregrind gurgles and roars than the distinctive monstrous vocals that are present in later releases and in nearly all of Jen's projects. But the churning bass, industrial touches, and emphasis on interesting drum patterns are intact. I love
Unsanitary Breeding Ground, but one thing this tape has over that one is greater cohesion. These tracks all feel like they were made for this release whereas Unsanitary Breeding Ground pulls some of its tracks from previous splits. Anyway, I could go on for paragraphs talking about this tape and Black Mold Phallanx in general but I'll leave off here.
The tracks from this can also be found on the comp of BMP's first two demos and first two splits that Newborn Porn Prodz put out a few years ago, although that tape probably isn't much easier to track down than the originals at this point.
